Best new indie music 2015

Sounds like: No-bullshit, ultra-dynamic '90s-style alt rock in the tradition of Liz Phair, the Breeders, and That Dog. Kerry Alexander's lyrics are as sharp as her songs are catchy. Sounds like: Kinda like if Pavement was fronted by a brainy Australian woman. Barnett's lyrics are consistently brilliant, and she has a gift for juxtaposing mundane, funny details with heartbreaking lines about trying to keep your head together. Sounds like: Gorgeous shoegaze music built around electric organ drones and airy guitar arpeggios. The band put out two albums this year: Depression Cherry , which leans a bit more ethereal, and Thank Your Lucky Stars , which sounds a little more grungy and scuffed up. Sounds like: If you need your emo revival itch scratched, Beach Slang does it with aplomb. Think loud power chords lifted by anthemic sing-along vocals that almost make up for the fact that Japandroids didn't release an album this year. Sounds like: Imagine if Vampire Weekend had anxious Canadian cousins who were just as good with melody, but less predictable in their rhythms. Sounds like: An old friend.

Indie-pop has become such a wide-ranging descriptor used to describe everything from cutesy, Target-ad-ready tunes full of sickly-cute, faux-happy tunes to rough-and-rugged DIY stuff soaked in noise and the smoldering embers of punk. The comforting side of the music represented here is deceptive.

While most Top lists come out in December, the Spotify Community waited until the proper end of to finish our Top Indie Songs list. So we're presenting it to you this January. The Top Indie songs released last year as chosen by our Spotify Community members and staff. Below our Community members have outlined why they love these songs. You can follow the song playlist here. Sweet atmosphere, haunting organ, crystal guitar, ethereal voices. Among several solid compositions, the song "Turn Away" shows the richness of his songwriting carried by a delicate voice and an electronica sound. Nothing to complain about. Nothing in the middle. I can admit that sometimes her voice can get on the nerves of the listener but, personally, I like her craziness, I like her energy, I like her "punk attitude", especially in this song "SCREAM", out of the album Art Angels.

Although there are no strict rules as to who should do the asking, the Mormons are very conservative and in general, they expect guys to do the asking. There is the possibility that she will wise up over time, but not likely. I'm not so sure. Let them see the good in you, and believe that their son or daughter has found a good match. Such beliefs make the girls confident about being women. In response to your comment about being with that creative director think all relationships have problems. Well, maybe not a total disaster, that is a bit exaggerated. We also had to move several times now and will move few more times. I am willing to add his religious observances to our worship as a couple and as a family, but should I also be willing to give up some of my participation in my own faith в for example by attending the temple or Sunday services slightly less often in order to spend more time as an entire family. You need to do this ceremony first where you end up pledging all your money and property to the church: It's cruel to suggest it.

Over on our Facebook, friend-of- D. Here is how we described the phenomena on Facebook:. It can be a sound more unfamiliar, less expected, and that helps make great, unique music. Go download some Vance Joy, go check out some James Bay. One feels like this is the album that Marcus Mumford always wanted to make; like he wanted to be like when Neil Young was sued for not sounding enough like Neil Young and not like when John Fogerty was sued for sounding too much like John Fogerty.

Did you know The Offspring had a new album-less single this year? Their songs just make you happy, and this peppy track is no different. In , the band siblings Gert and Sarah Bettens each started solo projects… and then proceeded to open for each other on tour. The Bettens got back together again in for the stellar record Echo Mountain. A call back to their enigmatic and husky straightahead US East Coast rock-and-roll sound, every track on Phantom Cowboy sounds like it could be right from the Paradise In Me sessions.

The irony of such a familiar sound is that for the first time, Sarah and Gert wrote music and lyrics together as opposed to the past where they would write separately and tweak in the studio. Guess that just proves the strong connection of these Belgian siblings. Read into that as you wish, but we suspect fans were not disappointed in this effort. Silversun Pickups are the latter. The legacy of that song has been hard to top, even two albums later. She was opening for a band of which we were unfamiliar called something like Lucian?

Mouse is dissolving, Mouse is removing. There is Mouse underneath the ocean. Goddamn you, Beck Hansen. But the man can really do no wrong, and you have to respect him. Do you know the story behind this song? Oh, of course. We shoulda had some by now. There is not one single doubt that this is the most electronic club track on our countdown. Wait what, not that Sugar Bowl? Ahh… gotcha. Something Corporate. Now he himself in the Wilderness.

Click here. Go find us more Lordes. Sorry Joni Mitchell and Neil Young. The people were not happy. That being said, we really like the beepy boopy version. Nevermind the haters, we love the beepboops! Who is the happiest, most positive and upbeat band in the world? The Bs? Is Deelite still around? Those are all great suggestions, thanks. Wrap all that with a simple chorus that begs singing along and an easy-to-bop-to hook, and you have the recipe for a California-tinged hit.

This song is just hippie guitar-and-tambourine beginning to end. Far out, man. Our bro Max and the crew took top spot in , and we traded in quality for quantity and more quality! DFA has exactly 2 albums to their name… released a decade apart.

First of all, yes. One of our White Whales, Wildlife is towards the top of our list of bands we want to see touring down here in the states likereallysoon. Lauren Mayberry is a greatly talented yet reluctant frontwoman. There is no doubt that The Struts are very British. We can imagine the screaming sing-along of a Struts live show, and it seems like a whole lotta fun.

Although they started life hailing from Connecticut, Cheerleader made the right and correct decision to base themselves in Philadelphia. I mean what band is from Connecticut?? The Philly music scene is booming, and this quintet is helping lead the charge. A friend of D. It took us late into to get it, but we really like A Silent Film. Nashville has long been the mecca of being discovered for a wide range of genres, and very much rock and indie music.

We had heard the name Lights a person, not a band bandied around for a while, only really knowing her as this young pop artist the teenage girls were going batty for. Let us explain. She was the indie darling of , appearing at the top of more Best Of lists than we can name. But every accolade is completely deserved. It also calls to the point that during the time between her previous CD and this record, Ms.

If they goal was to make very un-The National music, effort achieved. Want proof of the pop-iness of this song? Taylor Swift herself included it on a TS-curated playlist she tweeted out to all her followers. This song has been written before, right? It just had to have been. Elle King has written and recorded a song that will forever be a staple of the karaoke circuit, destined to be belted out by thousands of spurned girl and boy friends in burning retribution. Never before has a song about a badass woman chewing up her needy ex-boyfriends and spitting them out been so effing fun.

Who writes a song about a guy with a name no one has had in 50 years? And why did she sound like Edith Bunker when she said his name?

But man, we had questions. Or the other way around. The Zolas Say Relax! Working their asses off — while trying to not also go broke — Danielle and husband Drew knew they had the talent, but were frustrated with the lack of even a hint of success. That one moment changed everything. The couple quit their jobs to focus completely on music, and used the money to start serious work on recording. Crafting a perfect synth-rock track to kick off a perfect synth-rock record, we are confident that the sounds of Dear Rouge will find their way to radio around the world.

Or that the Canadian chanteuse would land 3 songs on our countdown. But this ridiculously catchy track got into our head the very first time we heard it, and it never let go. When we caught Lights in concert, we were a little intimidated by the gaggle of screaming, jumping, and crying yes, crying teenage girls filling the room around us and their chaperone dads, which I am sure they thought we also were , but once Lights broke out her new tracks, the barriers broke down. In concert, the bandmembers regularly switch up instruments, shuffle around on the stage, and take equal turns sharing lead vocal duties.

A galloping barrel of indie club rock. If you have comments, additions, or arguments, tweet us PhillyPartTwo or email us at phillyparttwo [at] gmail [dot] com. Best of You can view the full Best of playlist on YouTube here or just watch the embed below :.
